Bright Flow Logistics Services is pleased to highlight the formal handover and takeover ceremony marking the assumption of duty by Deputy Comptroller DC N NWALA PHD as Acting Customs Area Controller of the Cross River/Calabar Free Trade Zone/Akwa Ibom Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service.
The ceremony, held on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at Customs House, Calabar, was attended by distinguished stakeholders in the maritime, trade, logistics, and customs administration sectors, including DR. ANIE ITON, CEO of Bright Flow Logistics Services, who was invited to witness this significant transition in the leadership of the Command.
The occasion represented an important moment for customs administration and stakeholder engagement across Cross River State, Akwa Ibom State, and the Calabar Free Trade Zone, given the Command’s strategic role in facilitating international trade, securing Nigeria’s borders, and supporting revenue generation.
NKIRU NWALA OUTLINES PRIORITIES FOR EFFECTIVE CUSTOMS ADMINISTRATION
Upon assuming office, Acting Customs Area Controller Deputy Comptroller DC N.NWALA PHD expressed appreciation to the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and the management of the Nigeria Customs Service for the confidence reposed in her.
She acknowledged the strategic importance of the Command, which oversees critical trade and economic activities involving a major seaport, the Calabar Free Trade Zone, international border operations, and commercial corridors serving Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.
In outlining her vision for the Command, Nwala identified four key priorities:
REVENUE GENERATION AND COMPLIANCE: Strengthening revenue collection in accordance with the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and encouraging voluntary compliance with customs regulations.
TRADE FACILITATION: Promoting efficient customs procedures and supporting legitimate businesses engaged in import and export activities.
BORDER AND ECONOMIC SECURITY: Intensifying efforts to combat smuggling and other threats to Nigeria’s economic and security interests, particularly along the Mfum–Ekok border corridor.
PROFESSIONALISM AND PARTNERSHIP: Building stronger relationships with government agencies, licensed customs agents, port operators, businesses, and other stakeholders through transparency, fairness, and mutual respect.
These priorities reflect the important balance between effective revenue administration, national security, and the facilitation of lawful international commerce.
ACKNOWLEDGING CONTINUITY AND BUILDING ON EXISTING ACHIEVEMENTS
During the ceremony, Nwala acknowledged the contributions of her predecessor, Comptroller MOMODU GIWAH DAUDA, and expressed her commitment to building on the achievements recorded under his leadership. She indicated that her administration would pursue improved revenue performance, more responsive trade facilitation, stronger enforcement, and enhanced stakeholder engagement.
She also sought the cooperation of officers of the Service, industry stakeholders, and host communities in delivering on the Command’s responsibilities with integrity and professionalism.
The leadership transition comes at a time when effective border management, efficient cargo movement, and stronger compliance systems remain essential to Nigeria’s trade development and economic security.
